There are two major groups of back muscles. They include the Extrinsic back muscles which are the superficial intermediate muscles. They control the limb and respiratory movements as well as connect the upper limbs both the trunk.
The muscles include:
-Trapezius
-Latissimus dorsi

Intermediate Extrinsic muscles are superficial respiratory muscles
(Serratus posterior superior and inferior muscles

They also include the Intrinsic back muscles. These are intermediate muscles which produce movement and maintain posture of the vertebral column. They also extend from the pelvis to the cranium. Thoracic and Lumbar parts of the deep fascia constitute the thoracolumbar fascia. The superficial layer of the Intrinsic back muscle the Splenius muscle are thick, flat and lie in the lateral posterior aspect of the neck. It extends to the Splenius cervicis and the cranium. These muscles cover the deep neck muscles.
These muscles are muscles within muscles and their layers.
